Hits and Misses Q4W5

My hits and misses, I guess you could say, are very interesting. My first two quarters were misses. I did not do so well in this class. I didn't do all of my homework, so I threw away points just because I was lazy. If I could have the first two quarters back, I would definitely take the opportunity.

In my last two quarters, I got my act together and started completing my work. I just started to care. It sounds really sad, but its true. I feel that my writing and tests were better as well. Overall, Im happy with my improvements over the year, so thats a hit.

Anticipating Our Next Book Q4 W5

2. If you are in a position of power, you are happy.

If you are in a position of power, you are not always happy. I strongly disagree with statement number two. There are many people who are in a position that are not happy. When people have a position of power, then they could be stressed out causing them to make wrong decisions. It could also effect their mental health. Kim Jong-un for example is the ruler of North Korea and is not happy. His missiles are failing causing him to be very unhappy.

7. Some things are destined or fated to happen.

I strongly agree that some things are are fated or destined to happen. As a Christian I believe that Lord Jesus Christ our savior has a plan for each and every one of his children, I being one of them. My path in life has been chosen by the Lord Jesus Christ. In church last Sunday, my preacher, taught me one of the greatest life lessons I have become to known. He preached and preached about fate. It really spoke to my heart. I felt it in my soul. I feel that my fate had been compromised. Therefore, I agree with this statement. 

Most Precious Childhood Possession Q4 W4

My most precious childhood possession was probably my Patrick Peterson jersey and gloves. When I was in fifth grade, my family and I went to Arizona for a Grand Canyon trip. But My dad and I really wanted to go to see the Cardinals play. We ended up going to a game and I was very excited. I wanted to see my favorite team the Arizona Cardinals and my favorite player Patrick Peterson for the first time. My dad and I traveled from our hotel in Scottsdale to Glendale. It was an NFC West showdown, Cardinals vs. Rams, and we had to get to the game early, so I could get a jersey. When we got there I, of course, bought a Patrick Peterson jersey and was super excited. Sadly, the Cardinals lost the game, but Patrick Peterson got an interception and he gave me his game worn gloves in the stands.

After the game, he invited my family and I to go eat at a restaurant called “Papadeaux’s”. The restaurant was great and we had a great time. Patrick is a really nice guy and I enjoyed myself. After we ate, he told me he had a surprise for me. So we went out to his car, which was a Rolls Royce, and pulled out his game jersey out of the trunk. He signed it and asked for the gloves and signed those too. It was one of the best days of my life and I’ll keep the jersey and gloves forever.

Purple Hibiscus Q4 W4

Purple Hibiscus has been a challenging book at times. The mix of English and Igbo in this book got a bit confusing at first. As the book went on I got used to the characters speaking half Igbo and half English. Also, this book is written by a Nigerian author. In Nigeria, the "slang" words are a bit different, and they don't speak English like we do in America.

In Purple Hibiscus, there are many characters that are fathers in this book. For example, Father Amadi, Father Benedict, Papa, and Papa-Nnukwu. This can be very confusing, but since I am annotating thoroughly, it makes things much easier. If I would have chosen to do the blogs, I feel like I would be lost in this book.

Obamacare Q4 W2

This article describes the top five biggest Obamacare fails. The first point states that Obamacare is unaffordable. Democratic leaders lied repeatedly in saying that the reform measure would lower monthly healthcare premiums. For the Americans that had not had health insurance, this isn't true. Now, these people pay around 60-90 percent more.

I do not know why politicians lie sometimes. I think its really not smart and that people will always eventually find out. I think Obamacare is very helpful, but if its not as affordable there's no point. As soon as people make it affordable it will help everyone. Overall, I think its a good idea.

Baseball Season Q4 W1

Right now, we are midway through our Episcopal baseball season. I am really enjoying myself right now. Baseball is one of my favorite sports, and I wouldn't trade it for anything in world. Although we haven't won many games this year, I feel that our team is excellent. We have a great group of guys, and I couldn't ask for better teammates or coaches to support me and the team through our journey.

The reason why we aren't winning many games is because we have one coach, that coaches two teams, which is around 40 kids. We don't get much attention, but we are very talented. By the time it is our senior year, I know we will be competing for the state championship. I can't wait.

My Progress Q4 W1

This year, I have learned lots of thing about myself that I didn't know about before. I learned that my grammar wasn't the best. I learned that my sentence structure and my writing in general were just not good. On assignments like the "WRap" I would always get high scores. This year was a bit different. At the beginning of the year, I noticed that these categories were especially bad. As the year went along, I noticed myself getting better grades on my writing and these things have improved. There is always room for improvement in anything you do in life because we're humans. Although, I will try my hardest to get myself to as close as perfect as possible.

In this class I was challenged, it brought out the real me. Other than just writing, I have learned many things. I learned that I can't just barely squeeze by. I learned that I need to give it all I've got, or I just won't be successful in this class, or in life. I learned that the little things that we do are all for a reason and will up making or breaking your grade. I have had my ups and downs in this class, but as of now I think I'm improving. And I really enjoy this class.

Soccer Q3 W7

A couple weekends ago, my friends Luke, Joe, and I went to the burbank soccer fields to play in a pickup game. I wore my Neymar jersey because he my favorite player. When Luke brought us there, I had noticed that there was a wide variety of people. There were tall people, short people, Americans, Mexicans, Brazilians, Nigerians, Argentinians, Japanese people and many more. After we got there, we went right to picking teams. I was the first pick and I felt honored. I felt like I had to live up to the expectations of being the first picked. Joe and Luke got picked shortly after me.

When we first started playing, I wasn't playing my best. I was just coming off of a hurt ankle, so I was a little rusty. As the game went long I began to get opportunities. My first opportunity was a long shot. I took the shot from about 20 yards away and hit the post. I was so mad, and so was everyone else. Everyone took the game so seriously. After that missed shot, even though it was a tough, I didn't get as many passes. Then, I finally got the ball and did a roulette around the defender marking me and the goalkeeper came out of goal. As soon as I noticed that I did a rainbow. It was absolutely insane even though the keeper was a 4'9" Guatemalan, I felt accomplished. It was the most skillful goal I have ever scored.

Song Analysis Q3 W7

This week for my blog, I chose to analyze the song, "I Must Belong Somewhere" By: Bright Eyes. This song is about a stressed person that worries about lots of things. The artist wrote this song to tell the person that there is a place for everything and its not their mind. They should clear their mind of everything and just relax.

The artist also uses techniques such as repetition and consonance. Im not sure why the artist uses these techniques. Maybe just to be more poetic. The artist comes up with the most random things and places they belong. Maybe its because the artist is trying to show us how crazy the stressed person is and how he/she has lots on their mind. I think the artist did a great job in writing this song.

Gummy Worm Q3W6

One day at school, Patrick and Ja’Darius were playing basketball during recess. Ja’Darius said he needed a break and the two of them went to their backpacks to get snacks. Ja’Darius had gummy worms, but Patrick’s mom forgot to pack his snack that day. Patrick asked Ja’Darius if he could have at least one gummy worm, but Ja’Darius just would not concede a gummy worm even though he had a one pound bag of them. Patrick was being proponent by propounding Ja’Darius with the idea that he should give Patrick a gummy worm. In order to prevent a strife, Patrick challenged Ja’Darius to a game of one-on-one basketball. If Patrick wins, he gets a gummy worm. If Ja’Darius wins, Patrick doesn't get a gummy worm. The two decided to play to 21. Ja’Darius beat Patrick 21-1 because Ja’Darius fouled Patrick and made a free throw. Ja’Darius was going easy on Patrick. He felt so bad for beating so badly, so he gave Patrick a gummy worm anyway.

ATDPTI Response Q3W4

In ATDPTI, lots of things happen. First, Junior talks to a pretty girl named Penelope. He told her his name was Junior and everyone made fun of him. Then, Junior gets called racist names by Roger and his friends. It gets to a point where Junior cant handle it and punches Roger in the face. Junior thinks Roger will beat hime up because he’s huge. After that, Junior goes to school with his father’s friends Uncle Eugene on his motorcycle. Everyone at Rheardan is impressed including Roger. Junior is surprised Roger is being nice and then Junior thinks about his 12 year old crush and cries with Rowdy, who promises not to tell anyone. Then, Halloween comes around and Junior dresses up as a homeless person and tries to raise money. He gets $10 and is very proud of himself. But then some guys wearing Frankenstein costumes beat him up and steal the money. When Junior get back to Rheardan, he talks to Penelope and she wants to make a donation under Junior’s name.

At first, I felt bad for Junior because people were making fun of him. I don't like how Roger and his friends treated him. I’m glad Junior stood up for himself by punching Roger. I don't like how Junior took the money from the fundraiser, but he didn't really deserve getting beat up and mugged. 

Research Project Update Q3W4

So far in my research project, I have gotten a lot of work done and learned different techniques. I really understand everything and I am happy with my progress so far. I had trouble with in-text citations, but resolved this issue. When I talked to Dr. D it fixed everything. Another thing I fixed was my thesis and the focus of my paper.

Before, the main focus of my paper was if boxing is positive or not. Now, I have changed my focus to how boxing evolved to become a positive sport. I think I will receive a good grade on the paper and project when I’m done. And I really enjoy learning about my topic.

Reading Response Q3 W3

In ATDPTI, the main character is very funny. I enjoy how he makes fun of himself and isn't too sensitive about it. He was born with grease in his brain which could've effected him for life, but instead he came back as a good, funny guy. The only bad part about it is that he gets bullied a lot. He has an oversized head, so kids constantly make fun of him. Luckily, he has a good friend named Rowdy who sticks up or him.

I feel bad for the main character in this book because all he wanted to do was be somewhat successful. He doesn't want to have to be poor, but is born into it unfortunately. The worst part about him being poor is that his family couldn't afford a visit to the vet and to put the dog down. So far in the book, I feel bad for the main character. I would definitely choose my life over his.

Emotional Weekend Q3 W3

This weekend was the last weekend for hunting and I really wanted to kill a deer. I had killed three this year already, but still wanted to kill more. I decided to hunt a stand with a very pretty field. This field was located on a creek in the woods. I chose this stand because it hadn’t been hunted in a long time and we caught a nice cull on camera.

I ended up seeing all non-shooters and I was very upset. The end of the hunting is always an emotional time. I usually spend all my weekend in Woodville and I have become attached. Im extremely upset that I cant go hunting every weekend. Its my favorite thing to do, and I plan on doing it for the rest of my life.

Research Update Q3 W2

So far, my research project has been great. I have learned a lot about boxing. There are pictures of people boxing depicted on the walls of the Beni Hassan tomb site. Some say its not and it started in the first Greek Olympics. From the olympics boxing spread across the Roman Empire and grew big once it hit England.

Some people say boxing is not fair. Boxing wasn’t fair before Jack Broughton made the rules. The smaller boxers would always lose the fight. He invented the boxing gloves and completely changed the game. Boxing becomes big and spread across the world. When it came to Canada, it was outlawed because people thought it was bad. At around the same time, in England, two men fought and donated over $30,000 to charity. Earlier in history, boxing also influenced Kung-Fu. It is a major part of many cultures and shaped the way of many lives. It is a good, and important thing.

Something I've Learned Q3 W2

Last semester, I learned that I need to put a little more effort into things. I slipped behind a lot in English. I didn't complete all of my work that needed to be completed. If I would’ve done the work I could've gotten an A in the class. Instead, I was lazy and didn't want to do my work.

This semester, I realize that all I need to do is put a little more effort. All it takes is completing the little assignments. That is my goal this semester, is to not fall behind. So far I have done all my assignments, and if I keep it up I know I can get straight A’s.

Dead Deer Q3 W1

Last weekend, I was deer hunting at my camp in Woodville, Mississippi. It was a saturday afternoon and it had snowed the day before. It was about 20 degrees, but felt like 8. I was hunting in a deer stand called “Boo Hoo”. While walking into the stand, I jumped a doe. I was excited that I had seen a deer already, but upset that it ran away. I wasn't really worried though because its the rut.

At about 4:15, 4 does came running out from the right side of the field. I knew something was chasing them and I got really excited. About fifteen minutes later, at 4:30, 2 more does came running out the left side of the field. I just knew a buck was chasing them and at 4:45 I called in a big eight point from the right side. He was the one chasing the first 4. I was super excited, but as I began to study him, I noticed that he was only a three year old deer. I had to wait longer to see if the buck that was chasing the 2 does from the left would come out. 

Finally, at 5:10 the dominate buck in the area came out. He had a huge body, but he was only a six point. This means he is a cull buck. I picked up my gun and waited for him to get closer. Finally, when he came 100 yards from me broad-side I squeezed the trigger. I had dropped the buck right there with my new gun.

Research Project Update Q3 W1

My research topic is the history of boxing and its importance. I am really enjoying learning about it. Some sources are easier to annotate than others. For example, I had one source with a picture and short paragraph explaining it. It was hard to do, but I got it done. Some easy sources I had were encyclopedias. They were just filled with information and easy to write about.

One thing I needed help with was finding primary sources. I found this to be the most difficult part of the research. It took me over an hour to find them. Once I got those done, everything else was pretty easy. I think I will get a good grade on the annotation assignment.
